Ask Ann Question #1: Salary Expectations
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What about when an employer asks for salary expectations?
Where do I put that in my cover letter?

A: I would recommend that you leave your salary requirements
out of your cover letter even if an employer requests them.
Salary requirements are used by employers as a weeding tool
to screen out candidates. If you meet the qualifications
listed in the job posting, you will be contacted by the
employer even if you haven't included your salary requirements.
Your goal is to delay the discussion of salary until you have
had an opportunity to sell yourself. After you have interested
an employer, you have more leverage to negotiate a fair salary,
one that could be outside the original salary range for the
position.

Ask Ann Question #2: Interviewing
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Hi Ann, I hope you can help me. I have a terrible fear of
interviewing. I honestly do not know where to begin to
explain it to you! I'm miserable at even the THOUGHT of it!
I do know how to answer the questions I'm asked, but my mouth
freezes up, and I start feeling nauseated. Is there any way
to overcome these fears? I've interviewed 12 times since
graduating and it's not getting any easier. If anything,
it's worse because I'm getting really down on myself. I'm
starting to think something is terribly wrong with me! I have
nightmares about it! ANY advice you can give will be helpful!
Thanks! Maggie

A: Maggie, interviewing is a stressful experience for everyone.
You won't be able to entirely eliminate the stress you feel
while interviewing, but you can take some steps to minimize
your fear and anxiety.

As a first step, spend some time thinking about why you have
such an extreme negative reaction to interviewing. If someone
contacts you for an interview, it means they are interested in
hiring you. That's a good thing. Do you fear "blowing it" and
missing out on a great job opportunity? Are you afraid of
looking stupid to the interviewer? Are you afraid you won't be
able to do the job if hired? Determining the true source of your
fear is the first step to managing it. Your next step is to
develop an action plan to build your confidence.

Part of your plan can include recognizing that although most
people might not be as open as you are about expressing their
fears about interviewing, they have, to some degree, similar fears.
Try forming a support group of trusted friends to share interview
concerns and experiences. It helps to realize you aren't alone in
feeling the way you do.

Find someone to give you a mock interview. Doing this will build
your confidence and reduce your fear. Check with your campus career
center, ask a friend, or hire a career counselor. Listen carefully
to the feedback you receive. Perhaps you are doing better than you
think. Incorporate the tips you receive and give yourself credit for
preparing to do well in your "real" interview.

The final suggestion I have is to spend some time the night before
an interview visualizing yourself doing well in your interview. This
suggestion may seem far-fetched, but athletes and others have used
visualization techniques as a means of successfully impacting a
desired outcome to an event.

I hope these tips will help make interviewing less stressful for you.
I wish you the best of luck.

Ask Ann Question #3: Being Contacted at Work
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I'm concerned about having employers call me at work. I
don't have privacy. Should I leave my work number off my
resume to prevent employers from contacting me there?

A: No, leave your work number on your resume. Take credit
for being employed. If you leave your work number off your
resume, employers will think you are unemployed even if you
show your experience at your current job as being from your
start date to present. Right or wrong, being currently
employed makes you a more desirable candidate. If you are
contacted at work and can't talk, let the employer know that
you can't talk at the moment and suggest an alternative time
for completing the conversation.
