Career Q&A: Question #1
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How can a person tell when it is time to move on to
another job/company? What constitutes a valid reason?
A: Are you unhappy with your current work situation? When
faced with a work situation that makes you unhappy, you have
three options: do something to change whatever it is that is
making you unhappy, learn to accept the situation for what it
is without bitterness, or move on. Staying in a situation
that continues to make you miserable is not an option. If you
are unhappy in your present situation and have tried
everything you can to remedy the situation, it is time to
move on and look for a new opportunity.

Career Q&A: Question #2
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: I was recently asked by an employer if I could commit to
three years of service in an interview, I was so shocked at
the question I said yes. But now I'm terribly upset about it
and wonder if I should call him back and tell him I cannot
make that kind of commitment. My brother says this isn't
right for the guy to ask in the first place, but I really
want this job, and am kind of stuck. What do you think?
A: I don't think you need to call the employer back at this
point. If you receive a job offer from this employer, you
can address the three-year commitment issue at that time.
I'd recommend that you then put the ball back in the employer's
court by saying that you can commit to staying onboard as long
as you remain challenged, have the opportunities to advance your
career, and are properly compensated. In the future, if you are
asked a similar question during an interview. Respond with a
"yes", but use the "escape clauses" I've listed above. That
should cover your bases.

Career Q&A: Question #3
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Hello, I am 49 years old and employed as a probation
officer. I have a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.
My background is in the security profession. I have worked
as a security supervisor, training officer, and investigator.
My annual salary is $50K.
I am a novice computer user. However, I would like to
investigate the possibility of becoming involved in computer
security as an investigator or consultant. I am not interest
in programming.
Is my career objective realistic? Could you suggest any
certifications which might give me an edge over other
candidates seeking the same type of employment? Is it
unrealistic to expect an equivalent salary?
Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
A: I can't tell you whether your career objective is realistic,
but I can give you some suggestions to help you answer that
question. First, check out the Ask the Employer web site (see
the web site review given above) to see if you can be paired
with a mentor in your field of interest. Next, identify
companies that provide computer security services. Contact
them to arrange informational interviews with one of their
investigators. Finally, go to the library and look in Gale's
Encyclopedia of Associations to find professional associations
for the computer security field. Contact these associations
to find out about local meetings, member directories, and
industry salary surveys. Use information gathered from these
sources to determine whether your career objective is realistic.
