============================================================ Career Q&A: Question #1 ------------------------------------------------------------ Q: Should I apply for positions where I don't have all of the qualifications the employer has listed as required for the job?
A: Absolutely. The employer has created a "wish list" giving the attributes of the ideal candidate. It is unlikely that this candidate exists. Or if they do exist, it is unlikely that the employer would pay this candidate the salary they would require. The situation is similar to when someone starts looking for a house. The potential homeowner lists everything they want in a home and determines the price they can pay. After looking at houses, reality hits. They end up trying to find something in their price range that meets a few key criteria. Apply for any jobs that interest you where you meet some of the qualifications.
------------------------------------------------------------ Career Q&A: Question #2 ------------------------------------------------------------
Q: In listing skills on a resume, what are the guidelines for including or excluding a skill? There must be some criteria. I don't want to undersell myself or mislead possible employers.
A: The guideline for including a skill on your resume is to use your best judgment. If the skill is one you have used frequently in a job or as part of a course, by all means list it. If you have rarely used the skill, but have received some training in the skill, list the training on your resume.
If you used the skill to accomplish a task or school project and this skill is one you feel is in demand, do include a resume bullet that describes your use of the skill and what you accomplished. You did use this skill to accomplish the task or school project. You would not be misleading an employer by including a true statement of your accomplishments on your resume.
If you are asked about the skill in an interview, explain honestly what you accomplished with the skill. Refrain from undercutting yourself by questioning your competence in the skill.

============================================================ Career Q&A: Question #3 ------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Do I need to include an objective on my resume?
A: Yes, an objective is highly recommended. Your objective lets an employer know the type of position you are seeking and why you are qualified for that type of position. And it lets the employer know this information early in your resume. Since employers quickly scan resumes visually or screen resumes electronically based on keywords, it is important to make it as easy as possible for an employer to see that you are interested in and qualified for the type of position they are trying to fill. An objective helps you accomplish this goal effectively. ------------------------------------------------------------ How to Submit Your Career Question to Quest ------------------------------------------------------------
