Ask Ann Question #1: Handling a Gap in Work History
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Ann, I have been out of work for the last 3 years because
of a disability. I want to go back to work. How do I write
a winning resume with this glitch in my work experience??????
Mark
A: Mark, you may want to consider a functional-style resume.
With a functional resume, you group your resume bullets into
functional areas like marketing, sales, and management rather
than associate these bullets with particular jobs. You list
your employers and dates of employment after the functional
section of your resume. With this approach, you lead with
your strengths and hook the reader prior to them seeing the
gap in your work history. To see an example of a resume that
was converted from a chronological style to a functional style,

Ask Ann Question #2: Is it too Late?
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Hi Ann, do you think it looks bad to prospective employers
if a person is in school for more than the normal 4-5 years?
I changed majors late in my junior year, and now I'm concerned!
I'll be in school for another 3 years! Is 26 too late to
"start" a career? Zeb
A: Zeb, 26 isn't too late to start a career. Use the time you
have between now and graduation to obtain internships in your
chosen field. When you graduate, you'll have strong work
experience to include on your resume. A resume typically only
includes a gradation date, not dates of attendance. Once you
graduate, you may be asked in an interview how long it took
you to complete your degree. You just need to explain why you
decided to change majors and then support this choice by
talking about how your internships confirmed that you had made
the right decision. It takes insight to recognize you are
traveling down the wrong path and courage to take the risk to
make a change. Both of these qualities are assets that will
serve you well in the future.

Ask Ann Question #3: GPA vs. Experience
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: HI, I was wondering how I can prove to be the best
qualified candidate for a job based on my excellent experience
as opposed to an average GPA. Any tips? Kathy
A: Kathy, if you have been out of school for a few years,
have your experience section of your resume proceed your
education section. If your GPA is below 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,
don't include it on your resume. If you are an experienced
worker, you won't likely be asked about your GPA in an interview.
If you are asked, your GPA won't count as much to employers as
your actual work experience.
