From the Editor: Fingerprinted by the Police!
------------------------------------------------------------

The police recently fingerprinted my husband and me. No, we
weren't arrested. We hope to adopt a child and a record of
our fingerprints is required as part of the adoption
application.

Our original intention was for me to get pregnant, but that
wasn't in the cards for us. At different points in our lives,
we all are faced with dealing with events that are beyond our
control such as loss of loved ones, medical problems, or job
loss. It is important to take the time to grieve when we are
faced with an unexpected loss. It is equally important to
find the strength to move forward with our lives. We can't
always control what happens to us. We can control our
reaction to the uncontrollable events in our lives.

For those of you that have recently lost a job, you will
find a new one! To stay motivated, set weekly job search
goals. Ask a friend or family member to be a sounding board
for you. Join a job support group or work with a career
transition consultant to help you stay on track. Recognize
that you will have down days, but don't get down on yourself.
Continue to move forward.

As for my husband and I, we are excited to be in the process
of adopting a child. When one path ends, a new one begins.

I hope you enjoy this issue.

How to Submit Your Career Question to Ann
------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have a career question? Ask Ann. Submit your career
question via e-mail to mailto:ask_ann@QuestCareer.com
for possible inclusive in this e-zine. (Due to the volume of
questions received, we cannot provide individual responses.)

------------------------------------------------------------
Ask Ann Question #1: Desired Compensation
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Dear Ann, how should I respond to questions about desired
compensation? I don't want to leave money on the table.
Thanks, Joshua.

A: Joshua, for an opening with an employer, I would advise
against stating your desired compensation in your cover letter
even if it is requested. The salary information you provide
will only be used to weed you out. You may have the ability
to "move" their salary range once you have met with an employer
and sold them on you as the ideal candidate. The goal with an
employer is to delay salary discussions until you have had an
opportunity to sell yourself.

If the opening is listed through a recruiter, you need to be
prepared to respond to the salary requirements question either
in your initial cover letter or in a phone interview with the
recruiter. They won't present you unless they have confirmed
that your salary requirements are in the range for the position.
You can respond to their question about salary requirements by
asking them what the salary range is for the position prior to
answering their question about your salary requirements. This
tactic sometimes works. When responding, provide them with a
broad range to help your cause.

Ask Ann Question #2: No Success with Job Search
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Dear Ann, I am a B.Com graduate of a Sri Lankan University.
I have been seeking a job since six months. But still I could
not find. I have some knowledge of Computer. Can you please
suggest any suitable way to find even a small job until I know
what I want to do with my life. --T.G.

A: T.G., I think you need to review the steps in the job search
process to determine where your job search is breaking down.
Here are the main steps in a job search:

1. Determine the type of job you are seeking. Be as specific
as possible about your job target.
2. Develop a resume highlighting your accomplishments **that
support that job target** to sell yourself to employers.
3. Develop a cover letter that supports your resume.
4. Identify job opportunities from multiple sources
and apply for those opportunities by submitting your resume
**with a cover letter**.
5. Identify executive recruiters to work with and submit your
resume with a cover letter to them.
6. Set goals for the number of opportunities you will identify
and respond to each week.
7. Interview with employers.
8. Write thank you letters to employers you interview with to
show your interest in the position.
9. Make follow-up telephone calls to all employers you interview
with that don't make you an offer. Learn what you can do to improve
for your next interview.
10. Receive a job offer, negotiate the best deal for you,
and start your new job!

Review each of these 10 steps to see where you are falling short
and develop a plan to correct problem areas.

Do you have a specific job target? If not, your resume is likely
unfocused. Employers want to see how you "fit" the position.

Are you finding opportunities to respond to, but not getting called
for interviews? Your resume is your tool to get you interviews.
Can you revise you resume to focus it more closely on your target?

Are you getting interviews, but no job offers? This points to
a problem with your interviewing technique. Work with someone on a
mock interview. Prepare responses to the tough questions you were
faced with in your interviews.

Review each of the remaining steps to isolate your problem areas
and develop a corrective action plan. Good luck!

Are you considering jobs in different cities? Are you
planning to relocate for your new job? Before accepting a
new position, be sure to review how your salary compares in
these different locations. Use the Salary Calculator site to
make these comparisons. On this site, you can enter your
current salary, the geographic location where you currently work,
and the location where you plan to work. The Salary Calculator
takes into consideration cost-of-living factors for the two
locations to provide you with a salary comparison. As an
example, according to the Salary Calculator, a $85,000 salary
in Minneapolis, Minnesota is equivalent to a $61,694 salary in
Sacramento, California.

Ask Ann Question #3: Job Objective
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Dear Ask Ann, I am applying to a large company and trying
to come up with an objective for my resume. There are several
positions in the company in which I'm interested, so I don't
have a clear objective-but you've said in the past that an
objective is important. How do I come up with an objective
when my goal is "to work for your company"? I mean, I'll
work as a janitor if that's what it takes to get in!
Awaiting your response, Cameron

A: Cameron, try using a format similar to this for your objective:

To obtain a challenging position at Describe Target Company's
Industry that utilizes my Describe Skills and Experience that
Relate to Target Positions and Describe Educational
Background that Relates to Target Positions.

Here's a detailed example of what I mean:

To obtain a challenging position at a large pharmaceutical company
that utilizes my market research and financial analysis experience,
my computer skills, and my bachelor's degree in business
administration.

Good luck!
