How to Submit Your Career Question to Ann
------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have a career question? Ask Ann. Submit your career
question via e-mail to mailto:ask_ann@QuestCareer.com
for possible inclusive in this e-zine. (Due to the volume of
questions received, we cannot provide individual responses.)

------------------------------------------------------------
Ask Ann Question #1: Structure of a Resume vs. a CV
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Dear Ann, kindly assist me with a standard structure of
a resume. I have realized that what I call a resume is a
mixture of a CV & Resume. Please assist me. A sample
resume can really help me. Regards, Daniel.

A: Daniel, here's the standard structure for a resume:

Contact Information
Objective
Professional Summary
Work Experience
Education
Skills

If you are a recent graduate, your Education section would
proceed your experience section and you would delete the
Professional Summary section.

There are several ways in which a resume differs from a
CV. Follow these additional points to prepare your resume
in the expected format. Each of these points relate to key areas
where resumes differ from CV's.:

1. Do not include personal information like height, weight, or
marital status
2. Use a bulleted format to highlight your accomplishments
rather than lengthy paragraphs
3. Avoid using first person "I" and "my" in your bullets, i.e. use
"prepared report" rather than "I prepared report"
4. Limit the length of your resume to 1-2 pages
5. Eliminate earlier positions that you held 20 years ago from
your resume to meet the resume length requirement
6. Avoid listing hobbies and personal interests unless they
relate to your target position

Ask Ann Question #2: Crafting an Objective
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Ann, I am looking for an objective for a receptionist with
light computers skills with a large company. Bobbi.

A: Bobbi, write your objective from the point of view of what
you can offer an employer, not from the perspective of what
you want. Highlight your one or two strongest selling points
for the position that interests you. To show you are actually
targeting the type of position the employer is trying to fill rather
than "fishing" for anything, include your desired job title in your
objective. With the information you have provided, one example
of a possible objective would be:

To obtain an administrative position that utilizes my experience
managing a X-line phone system for an X-employee company as
well as my computer skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Career Web Site Review: Gotajob.com
------------------------------------------------------------

Web Site: Gotajob.com
URL: http://www.gotajob.com

Are you looking for a part-time, seasonal, or temporary job to
earn some extra income? Or do you need flexibility in your
work schedule to accommodate family needs? Do you
have little time to spend looking for this type of job?

Gotajob.com provides job seekers with part-time, seasonal and
temporary jobs to suit their needs. Job seekers can be linked
with thousands of positions in the retail, restaurant, entertainment,
and hospitality industries.

Here's how it works:

Job seekers fill out one pre-employment 'application' on
Gotajob.com to match their needs with the requirements of
employers. There is no intensive resume preparation or submission
required. Job seekers browse job opportunities and select jobs that
interest them. Their application is automatically forwarded to those
businesses. Once the application has been sent, job seekers check
their Gotajob.com mailbox to see who has responded to arrange for
an interview - or employers contact them directly. Job seekers can
apply for several jobs in a matter of seconds and can specify a zip
code and the distance from home in which they wish to locate a position.
This site is an excellent resource for finding part-time, seasonal, or
temporary work without having to expend a lot of time or energy in
your search.

Ask Ann Question #3: How to Handle Lack of Paid Experience
------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Ann, I am completing a 4 yr MIS degree in 2 months,
have 18 years of business experience including 5 years of
supervisory experience. My technology skills are my weak
link. I feel I have a great deal to offer an employer, how do I
find a job? I have a 3.79/4.0 GPA, so I am an astute scholar.
Thank you. Deb.

A: Deb, if I understand your question correctly, your concern is
your lack of technical work experience. Here's how I
recommend you address that issue:

1. List your education section prior to your experience
section on your resume.
2. List not only your MIS degree and GPA, but also
relevant courses, programming languages, and software
applications.
3. Start your experience section with a description of school
projects you completed as part of your MIS degree program
as well as related work you may have done as an intern.
4. Create a portfolio of MIS project work to bring with your
to interviews to further support your qualifications for this type
of work.
5. Use techies.com, dice.com and other technical career sites to
post your resume and search for openings.
6. Don't rule yourself out for jobs where 1-2 years of experience
are required if you meet some of the other qualifications.
Apply for these jobs and stress your school project work in your
cover letter. Remember, employers list their ideal qualifications in
job postings, but are seldom able to find someone who meets all
of their requirements at the salary they intend to pay.
